Vet Cost Guide is an independent UK guide to what veterinary care actually costs and how pet insurance really works.
The site exists because pet owners are routinely asked to make expensive decisions without knowing the price. The Competition and Markets Authority found that average vet prices rose 63% between 2016 and 2023, well above inflation, in a market where most owners had no way to compare what different practices charge. When your dog needs surgery, you should be able to find out roughly what it costs, whether your policy covers it and what your alternatives are, in a few minutes and without a sales pitch.
What we do
- Publish plain-English price guides for common treatments, procedures and routine care, based on published price lists and public data.
- Explain how UK pet insurance works, including the parts insurers tend to gloss over: exclusions, co-payments, waiting periods and pre-existing conditions.
- Set out the options when money is tight, including charity help and payment plans.
Who writes it
Vet Cost Guide is written and edited by Alex Izquierdo. Guides covering clinical topics are checked against veterinary sources, and we are building a panel of qualified UK veterinary professionals to review our treatment content.
